Jose Mourinho shoulders blame for Manchester United's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool

Jose Mourinho shoulders blame for Manchester United's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool

Under-pressure Jose Mourinho remains confident that Manchester United will finish in the top four of the Premier League, despite Sunday's chastening loss at bitter rivals Liverpool leaving them 11 points off the pace.

A difficult season for the Old Trafford giants continued on Sunday as they deservedly lost to the leaders in a one-sided encounter at Anfield.

United were level at half-time after Alisson Becker's blunder saw Jesse Lingard cancel out Sadio Mane's opener, but Liverpool's pressure eventually counted as substitute Xherdan Shaqiri's deflected brace secured a 3-1 win.

It leaves Jurgen Klopp's men an eye-watering 19 points ahead of United after just 17 matches, but the 11-point gap to the Champions League spots is arguably even more concerning.

Asked if he was confident of making up that margin, Mourinho said: "Yes, I think (we can).

"What gives me that belief? It gives me the belief that we are going to make much more points in the second part of the season than we did in the first part.

"I know we lost some other matches but we played away at Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City - probably the three best teams apart from Tottenham.

"But we play with them away. I think we have more possibility to get more points in the second part of the season than the first part."

Mourinho's side do have a kind-looking set of matches coming up but they desperately need to up their performance heading into the festive fixtures.

Blame me for defeat
Too many players underperformed at Anfield, yet the United manager took the unusual step of shouldering the blame.

"I don't think a football team is just a squad - it's much more than the squad," Mourinho said.

"I am really, really happy with the players that I had on the pitch, with their attitude, with their effort. I am more than happy.

"And because I am more than happy, I assume the responsibilities of the defeat and I want them to be hidden behind me. They gave absolutely everything. Honest people, they gave absolutely everything.

"Eric Bailly knows he plays one minute before the game (because of Chris Smalling's injury in the warm-up).

"(Victor) Lindelof trained one day to play, (Diogo) Dalot trained one day to play.

"(Matteo) Darmian trained one day to play, Ashley Young played with a sore ankle and I could go on, and on, and on.

"I am happy with the players' commitment and the players' attitude.

"I feel really sorry for them because I don't think their effort deserve to lose the game we did.

"If we concede two goals in first 20 minutes I would say 'OK, the best team just killed us in the first 20 minutes'.

"To lose the way we did in the moment we did; I feel sorry for the boys."

Mourinho admires Reds' intensity

Mourinho defended hapless Romelu Lukaku's display - "I think he was positive" - and his decision to leave Paul Pogba, not so long ago the world's most expensive player, on the bench.

The United boss did, though, admit his side struggled with Liverpool's fast, intense play - the result of the injury issues which have long hampered the squad.

"We have lots of problems related with physicality," Mourinho said.

"We have lots of players that I could consider injury-prone because some of our players are always injured - and it's not with me, it was before me.

"If you look to the stats with Mr (Louis) van Gaal and David (Moyes), we have players that are permanently injured. When you are permanently injured, physicality is very difficult to get.

"Then there are qualities that a player has or doesn't have. You cannot improve, you cannot make them have.

"I gave you an example. (Andrew) Robertson, Mane, (Mohamed) Salah, (Georginio) Wijnaldum, (Naby) Keita, Fabinho - they are physical players.

"On top of that they are good technically - I also have lots of good players technically but we don't have many players with that intensity or physicality

Champions League: Real Madrid vs. CSKA Moscow

Real Madrid finishes up its participation in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday when the club hosts CSKA Moscow in the early slate. Los Blancos are 4-0-1 in Group G with 12 points and have the group wrapped up, while the Russian club is hoping to finish third and enter the Europa League round of 32. Roma has already clinched second place in the group.

Here's how you can watch the match and what to know:

Champions League: Real Madrid vs. CSKA Moscow

  • Date: Wednesday, Dec. 12
  • Time: 12:55 p.m. ET
  • Location: Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain

Storylines

Real Madrid: Since Real has already wrapped up the group, we may see them do as others usually do -- rest their best players. Why risk one of your more important players getting injured? Don't expect to see much of guys like Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, as this would be the perfect time to get some young players some minutes

.

CSKA Moscow: This team will try to go all out, playing with a focus on attack, knowing it probably needs a result of some sort to finish over Viktoria Plzen for third place. The team is fairly healthy entering the match, and the confidence will be there after beating Real earlier in the group stage.

The Russians can't get the win on the road, but they settle with a draw that ends up being enough to advance to the Europa League

Manchester United Team News, Updates and Facts
Man United Team News

Alexis Sanchez is out until the new year with a thigh injury, while Victor Lindelof will be out until close to Christmas with his own thigh problem. Ashley Young is suspended but Chris Smalling (foot) and Eric Bailly (back) will face late fitness tests. Marcus Rashford was taken off against Southampton but Jose Mourinho expects to have him available to face Arsenal. Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia are rated less likely to feature, however, with both suffering knocks. It does leave United light across the defence.
Man United Key Players
Marcus Rashford – Set up both goals in the comeback against Southampton and his fitness will be a boost to United after he was taken off later in that game with a slight niggle.
Anthony Martial – Dropped to the bench last time out but his goalscoring form was key to United’s last run of good results.
Romelu Lukaku – Got a much-needed goal to start the comeback against Southampton and the Belgian striker needs to kick on now for United’s sake.
Man United Team Form
Manchester United are without a win in their last three Premier League games, with only the stoppage-time victory against Young Boys in the Champions League - courtesy of Marouane Fellaini’s late winner – to their credit in that time. They lost 3-1 to Manchester City prior to the international break and since have drawn 0-0 at home to Crystal Palace and 2-2 away to Southampton – Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera earning a point after United found themselves 2-0 down early on.
Man United Predicted Starting Line up
Expected Line up: 4-3-3
Manchester United likely XI
·         Goalkeeper:David De Gea
·         Defenders:Diogo Dalot, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo
·         Midfielders:Marouane Fellaini, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba

Arsenal Team News, Updates and Facts
Arsenal Team News
After changing the game against Tottenham with his second-half introduction, Alexandre Lacazette could start against Manchester United. Aaron Ramsey was also introduced at half-time and claimed two assists and both men could therefore start. Nacho Monreal is out injured while Granit Xhaka is suspended – meaning a possible return for Matteo Guendouzi – but Mesut Ozil and Laurent Koscielny could be available. The latter is light on match fitness after his lengthy absence, while the German playmaker suffered a back spasm. Danny Welbeck is facing a long spell on the sidelines.
Arsenal Key Players
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – The Premier League’s top scorer after scoring his 11th and 12th goals of the season in the win against Tottenham.
Alexandre Lacazette – Stepped of the bench and helped change the game against Spurs, including grabbing his seventh goal of the season.
Aaron Ramsey – Staked his claim for a starting place with two assists as a half-time substitute in the North London derby.
Arsenal Team Form
Arsenal have won their last three matches in a row having drawn three in a row prior to that. All three wins have come since the international break, with an own goal and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s second-half strike earning a 2-1 win at Bournemouth before a much-changed team won 3-0 at Vorskla in the Europa League. Against Spurs last time out, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice and Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira secured a 4-2 home win.

Arsenal Predicted Starting Line up
Expected Line up: 4-2-3-1

Manchester United vs Arsenal Head-to-Head Stats
Manchester United won both matches against Arsenal last season to take them to 98 previous wins against the Gunners. Arsenal have won 82 times in this fixture and there have been 47 draws. Antonio Valencia opened the scoring at the Emirates last season and Jesse Lingard scored twice, either side of Alexandre Lacazette’s strike, to earn a 3-1 away win. At Old Trafford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan had cancelled out Paul Pogba’s opener against his former team but Marouane Fellaini popped up with a last-minute winner to make it 11 home games unbeaten (eight wins) in this fixture for United. Here are the results of the last five matches:
Apr 29, 2018: Manchester United 2-1 Arsenal
Dec 02, 2017: Arsenal 1-3 Manchester United
May 07, 2017: Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United
Nov 19, 2016: Manchester United 1-1 Arsenal
Feb 28, 2016: Manchester United 3-2 Arsenal
Manchester United have enjoyed a good record in this fixture in recent years – unbeaten in their last 11 home games against Arsenal and winning eight times.
But this is a different Gunners side, with Arsene Wenger’s long tenure in charge at an end and Unai Emery making an impressive start to life in charge.
The Gunners are unbeaten since August – a run of 19 games without defeat in all competitions – including three wins in their last three games.
A stirring second-half against Tottenham Hotspur earned a 4-2 home win in the North London derby and they can back that up by ending their recent poor record at Old Trafford.
United, on the other hand, are stuck in yet another rut – too often this season that has been the case.
A goalless draw against Crystal Palace was followed by having to come from 2-0 down to draw with struggling Southampton.
In between, they needed a 91st-minute winner to beat Young Boys in the Champions League and lost to Manchester City in the Manchester derby prior to the international break.
Their slow starts are hitting them hard – scoring first in just one of their last eight league games – and Arsenal can take advantage.
With United light at the back because of injury, the Premier League top-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and fit-again Alexandre Lacazette can take full advantage.

Luka Modric wins the Ballon d’Or: Real Madrid star ends decade of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominance

Modric is the first player since Kaka in 2007 to win the Ballon d'Or other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo

Bottom of Form

Luka Modric has been crowned as this year’s Ballon d’Or winner, France Football confirmed at the award ceremony in Paris on Monday night.

The Real Madrid midfielder is the first Croatian winner of the individual prize and caps a fine year in which he helped his club win a third consecutive Champions League title and also led his nation to the World Cup final in Russia.

Modric, who is 33, also claimed Fifa’s The Best award in September and ends a decade of dominance by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Ballon d’Or.

Between the two of them, the Portuguese and the Argentine had won all of the previous 10 Ballons d’Or, with five apiece in that time since Kaka won the trophy in 2007.

However, both will have to wait for the chance to add a sixth Golden Ball to their respective collections after a jury of journalists from different nations picked Modric as the winner of this year’s award.

The Croatian midfielder is expected to present the trophy to the Santiago Bernabeu next week, either ahead of the Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday or in the La Liga game at home to Rayo Vallecano the following Saturday

UEFA Europa League -- FC Vorskla Poltava VS Arsenal

Match Time11/30/2018 01:55 Friday (GMT+8)

Match Analysis:

FC Vorskla Poltava lost against FC Mariupol with 0-1 in last away game, suffered 3 consecutive losses. Moreover, they could not score goal in these 3 games, being in low state. Now the team is 4th on scoreboard.
It have to be metioned that that the team did't get draw both in league and UEFA EL. FC Vorskla Poltava is ranked 3rd with 3 points in group stage of UEFA EL. If they beat the rival and take all 3 points in this game, they will promote. So FC Vorskla Poltava is motivated. But in first leg, they lost against the rival with 2-4, still got difference with Arsenal. Arsenal defeated Bournemouth AFC in last home meeting, continued to keep unbeaten records, being in good form. Now the team is top 1 in group stage, will promote in advance. However, Arsenal needs to play with Tottenham Hotspur and Man city in the next. They have to prepare well in advance.

Vorskla Poltava vs Arsenal betting tips

Arsenal have a poor record in the Ukraine, but their decisive Europa League victory away to Qarabag suggests they can gain their first win at the sixth attempt in that country.

The Gunners have qualified for the knockout phase with two games to spare and now they need to beat either Vorskla Poltava away or Qarabag at home to ensure they advance at the head of the Group E table.

It would be a huge shock if Unai Emery’s side failed to get that victory, with they and Sporting Lisbon having been a class above their two opponents from eastern Europe.

Only once have Arsenal avoided defeat in the Ukraine, drawing with Dynamo Kiev and losing twice to both that club and Shakhtar Donetsk – but Vorskla, who were 24 points behind the runners-up when third in their domestic league last term, are not on that level.

This will be an unfamiliar 25,000-capacity stadium and city to Arsenal, but then so was Qarabag’s home when they travelled to Azerbaijan early last month and came away with an impressive 3-0 triumph at the venue for this season’s Europa League Final.

With the north London club unbeaten in their last 17 games and manager Emery clearly having a positive effect, this is expected to be another success for Arsenal even if they rest key players for a big six days ahead when they face Tottenham and Manchester United.

AC milan vs Dudelange UEFA Europa League 29/11/2018

On Thursday, at 17:55, AC Milan will receive a visit to Luxembourg at Dudelange in a match for the 5th round of the UEFA Europa League. The match will take place at the “San Siro” stadium in Milan.
A complicated situation, a modest adversary for the Milanese. With two rounds before the end of the UEFA Europa League group stage, AC Milan is ranked second, with 7 points in four matches, a tie with Olympiakos and a point under Betis leader. The “Rossoners” paid tribute to a disappointing “double” against the Spaniards, winning a single point and allowing them to take over the hierarchy.

Fortunately for Gattuso’s band, she still has high chances to qualify, and will benefit from this round regardless of the outcome of the confrontation between Betis and Olympiakos. Orisicum, referring strictly to the “San Siro” Thursday evening duel, it is clear that the pleasant surprise of the preliminaries, Dudelange, has “extinguished” giving opponents a lot over her caliber, and now all she can do is get out most honorable of, after all, one of the most difficult groups in this edition of the UEL.
Given the circumstances of this game, we are expecting a spectacular hostile run, guided by the force of the host offensive system. Simply, the difference in value is a huge one, it is realistically reflected in the odds of this duel and we believe that the “rossoners” will not face any problems in gaining an advantage on the table from the first half.

Preview: Chelsea vs. PAOK - prediction, team news, lineups

Chelsea will be aiming to extend their perfect record in Europa League Group L when they welcome PAOK to Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.

The Blues are already assured of a place in the last 32 of the competition and can make certain of top spot by avoiding defeat against the Greek side.

Chelsea
In what is their first ever participation in the Europa League group stage, Chelsea have progressed through to the first knockout stage with minimal fuss, winning four from four ahead of this visit of PAOK.

Following a tricky but deserved 1-0 win in the reverse fixture two months ago, secured through an early Willian goal at the Stadio Toumbas, Chelsea saw off Hungarian minnows Videoton by the same scoreline and then earned back-to-back wins over BATE Borisov.

It leaves the Blues way out in front at the top of the Group L standings, six points better off than closest challengers Vidi, who have just an outside chance of taking first place off the Premier League giants.

Maurizio Sarri therefore has the luxury of rotating his side for this fifth European matchday, though his side's disappointing run of form may tempt the Italian to field a stronger lineup against PAOK with the aim of picking up a first win in three matches.

Chelsea may be flying in Europe, but they have won just three of their last eight Premier League matches and were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, seeing them fall to fourth place in the table.

A lack of momentum will be a concern to Sarri, who has repeatedly pointed out that his squad is not strong enough to compete with Manchester City at the summit, so getting back to winning ways on Thursday is all the more important.

With games against West London rivals Fulham, now managed by former Blues boss Claudio Ranieri, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Man City to come in quick succession, Sarri's men cannot afford to perform as badly as they did at Wembley Stadium.

This match with PAOK may therefore have come at the perfect time to restore some confidence, with Chelsea winning each of their last five Europa League matches on home soil - four of those by a 3-1 scoreline - and going 13 matches without defeat at Stamford Bridge in European competition.

Getting that Tottenham result out of the system, as well as nailing down top spot in Group L with a game to spare, is now the immediate priority for Sarri.

PAOK
were tipped to provide Chelsea with their sternest tests in Group L, but they have so far managed just three points from a possible 12 and are on the brink of exiting the competition proper at the first hurdle.

The Greek side's only win and only goals came against BATE on matchday two, when coming away from the Borisov Arena with a 4-1 triumph.

They have failed to push on since then, however, losing 2-0 and 1-0 at home and away to Vidi, leaving them three points behind the Hungarian outfit and with their fate no longer in their own hands.

A failure to win at Stamford Bridge, coupled with a Vidi draw against BATE, would bring PAOK's European adventure to an end for another year. Victory for Vidi away at BATE in the early kickoff, meanwhile, will render this fixture a dead rubber for Razvan Lucescu's side.

PAOK retained the Greek cup last season but missed out on a place in both the Champions League and Europa League, so no matter what happens this week, they have already bettered their European return from 2017-18.

Being dumped out of a favourable Europa League group after five, or possibly four, matches is not exactly what Lucescu would have envisaged, however, especially having knocked out Basel and Spartak Moscow in Champions League qualifying, only to then fall short against Benfica in the playoffs.

When making it to the Europa League group phase PAOK tend to do well, progressing through to the knockouts in four of their previous six campaigns, though never further than the last 32.

The Solinka side have won nine and drawn six of their previous 21 away group games in this competition, meanwhile, and their 1-0 reverse at Vidi marked a first loss in five European away matches this season.

Chelsea cannot afford to completely write off the Greek visitors, then, especially as Lucescu's side have hit form with three wins in a row since losing to Vidi, most recently edging out Xanthi last weekend to leave themselves five points clear at the top of the Super League.

An injury sustained by Eden Hazard aside, Sarri has a fully-fit squad to choose from on Thursday night.

A number of fringe players are likely to get the nod here, even if top spot is not yet secured, so the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Pedro, Emerson Palmieri and Davide Zappacosta should all return to the fold.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is also in contention, a month on from scoring a hat-trick in a comfortable win against BATE here, while Olivier Giroud is expected to start instead of Alvaro Morata up top.

In terms of the visitors, Mauricio may return alongside Pontus Wernbloom in defensive midfield if Lucescu continues to chop and change in that department.

Dimitris Pelkas is another in line to return on the back of the loss to Vidi, though Aleksandar Prijovic should continue to lead the line after following up his goal in Serbia's win over Lithuania with a strike against Xanthi.

Meanwhile, Omar El Kaddouri is at risk of missing PAOK's final game should he pick up a yellow card on Thursday evening.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:

Caballero; Zappacosta, Cahill, Christensen, Emerson; Loftus-Cheek, Fabregas, Barkley; Pedro, Giroud, Willian

PAOK possible starting lineup:

Paschalakis; Matos, Varela, Crespo, Tosca; Wernbloom, Mauricio; Limnios, Pelkas, Kaddouri; Prijovic

Head To Head

Chelsea's 1-0 win in Salonika on matchday one was the first meeting between these two clubs in a UEFA competition.

The English side are now unbeaten in five matches against Greek opposition and have won both home games, most recently beating Olympiacos 3-0 in the 2007-08 Champions League last 16.

PAOK have a good record away to Premier League opposition, meanwhile, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal and winning 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur on their previous two visits to these shores.

 We say: Chelsea 3-0 PAOK

Chelsea have not always been at their best on the continent this season, winning three of their four matches 1-0, but they have ultimately got the job done on each occasion to cruise into the last 32. All that is left now is to secure top spot in Group L, which should not be too much of a problem against a struggling PAOK side.

Bayern Munich Vs. Tottenham Set For 2019 Audi Cup Final

There was plenty of entertainment at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday in the Audi Cup and we are backing another exciting game in the tournament...
